New GST rates implemented from today, know what became expensive and what became cheap.

Among the goods and services on which GST has been increased, 12 percent GST will be levied on hotel rooms, maps and charts, atlases, etc. on Rs 1,000 per day.  18% GST will be charged on each type of tetra pack.

Following the implementation of the GST Council's decision, many food items will become more expensive from today Monday.  It includes pre-packaged and labeled food items like flour, cheese and curd that will attract five per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST).  Thus, GST will also have to be paid on hospital rooms rented above Rs 5,000.  Apart from this, hotel rooms priced below Rs 1,000 per day have been asked to be taxed at the rate of 12 per cent, which currently has no tax.  The GST Council, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in its meeting last week, approved canned or packaged and labeled (other than frozen) products like fish, curd, cheese, lassi, honey, dry makhana, dry soybeans, peas.  wheat and others.  It was decided to levy 5% GST on cereals and rice.  The tax rate change will come into effect from July 18.

Tax increased on these items

The tax rates on items such as printing, writing or drawing ink, cutting blades, paper knives and knives with pencil sharpeners, LED lamps, drawing and marking equipment will be increased from 12 percent to 18 percent.  Solar water heaters will now attract 12 percent GST against 5 percent earlier.  Service related to roads, culverts, railways, metros, treatment plants and crematoriums were earlier taxed at 12 per cent, but will increase to 18 per cent from Monday.

Tax was reduced on these goods

However, the tax on some goods has also been reduced.  A 5% tax will be levied on ostomy appliance, goods handling and passengers by ropeway.  Earlier the rate of GST was 12 percent.  If trucks and freight vehicles are hired, they will be taxed at 12 percent instead of 18 percent.  Discounts on passenger transport by flights from North-Eastern states and Bagdogra have been reduced.  Now GST exemption will be available only to economy class passengers.  RBI, IRDA and SEBI services are also getting expensive from Monday.  Now these agencies will charge 18% tax on their service.  If your residents rent out a house or flat, it will come under the category of business and will be taxed at 18 percent.

 Hospital rooms became expensive

A business that facilitates biomedical waste treatment will be taxed at 12 percent.  Hospital rooms costing Rs 5000, which do not fall under the category of ICU, will attract 5% GST on those rooms.  This will not avail input tax credit.  That is, hospitals cannot carry forward and eliminate their losses.  If a person engages in recreational activities related to art, culture or sports or imparts related training, tax exemption will be available.  No concession will be given for any activity other than this.  Any electric vehicle with or without a battery pack will attract 5% GST from July 18.
