The drafting of the new National Education Policy, which has recently come out, has also emphasized increasing vocational education. It has also targeted to add fifty percent of the students by 5. At present, less than 5% of the working population of the country (age group of 3-5 years) has received vocational education.
When a student goes out of school and college, he or she has to roam around for a job because they have no professional skills. It is for this reason that initiatives have been made to make vocational education compulsory in education. Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has directed the officials to emphasize vocational education while taking over the responsibility of the ministry.
According to a report, the percentage of working people in the US working age group (ages 1 to 7) is higher, while in Germany 1 percent and in Korea 8 percent. In the proposed policy draft, it is recommended to teach vocational education in the school from sixth grade. In addition, instruction has been given to integrate vocational education in primary, secondary and higher education.
In the draft National Education Policy, it is recommended that the traditional skills prevalent in rural areas also be included in vocational education. The Union Government has emphasized on identifying such areas of special importance and impart training to the students. It will bring our ancient knowledge to a new generation as well as help us to understand India's social and cultural heritage. It has also been suggested to include such schools as embroidery, carpentry, installation, medicinal knowledge, sculpture and water conservation. This will provide employment opportunities and expand Indian knowledge against Indian youth in the new field.
